Final Blog Work

While I was reading The Old Man and the Sea, in the beginning I wasn’t sure about Hemingway’s progression of the book because I felt confused in some parts of his novel. As I continued to read more of his book, I learned some things such as fishing can not only build a bond with people or can be a powerful healer from a traumatizing time that can put in my everyday life or someone else’s life. This book is an excellent novel overall for someone that may like fishing with someone else, to have another father figure in their life, go on adventures that take you somewhere, and many more.  One of my favorite quotes from the novel is, “Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.” This is my favorite quote because you don’t know how every day  will be because of how unexpected things will be in your life. Take risks, try new things, meet new people, and and enjoy the life you have.

“Big Two-Hearted River” by Ernest Hemingway

After reading this interesting and emotional short story, this made me think of how one small thing can help someone have a sense of hope that can be found in themselves. An example of theme for this story is when you let your fear control you, it’ll do whatever it pleases. However, you can learn to face your fear with hope and courage. A symbol that I see in this story is fear because the swamp represents Nick’s fears and his uncertainties. Hemingway has a way of giving the reader an image of how the story progresses, what time period the story is in, the characters in the story, and what you felt while your reading. This story grabs and takes you on a journey with the characters such as Nick Adams going camping in the woods and catching the trout to help from his trauma of war to find hope.

“The End of Something” by Ernest Hemingway

During this past week, I’ve read Hemingway’s short story “The End of Something”. This short story reminds me the descriptive wording and the visual imagery of the setting it gave me like in “The Old Man and the Sea”. However, something that left myself questions wondering what made Nick and Marjorie break up.  ‘He was afraid to look at Marjorie. Then he looked at her. She sat there with her back toward him. He looked at her back. “It isn’t fun anymore. Not any of it.”‘ This short story not only left me wondering what could possibly happen next, but in the beginning of this story they both worked together while they were fishing for the trout by the resort. “Then Marjorie rowed the boat out over the channel-bank, holding the line in her teeth, and looking toward Nick, who stood on the shore holding the rod and letting the line run out from the reel. “

“The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway Week 1

This week I have read 70 pages in Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Old Man and the Sea”. This book is full of sensory detail and descriptive wording to not only set the scene in the book, but to give an image in the reader’s mind.  Throughout my years in high school, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a book as much as this one because I like everything about it from what I’ve read so far and this book gives excellent life lessons or themes. An example from the book is the old man needed the boy’s help to get the fish in when he was out fishing for the Marlin. An example of one of the themes from the book is how often the boy spends his time with the old man and he thinks the old man is another father figure in his life since he was five years old.
