“Big Two-Hearted River” by Ernest Hemingway

After reading this interesting and emotional short story, this made me think of how one small thing can help someone have a sense of hope that can be found in themselves. An example of theme for this story is when you let your fear control you, it’ll do whatever it pleases. However, you can learn to face your fear with hope and courage. A symbol that I see in this story is fear because the swamp represents Nick’s fears and his uncertainties. Hemingway has a way of giving the reader an image of how the story progresses, what time period the story is in, the characters in the story, and what you felt while your reading. This story grabs and takes you on a journey with the characters such as Nick Adams going camping in the woods and catching the trout to help from his trauma of war to find hope.

  1. I completely agree with everything you said. Hemingway is a montone writer trying to get the same point across just by using different themes and the man gets it done. He gets the reader to really think about the story and at some points I felt as if I was there. When Nick Adams is catching all these crickets and trying to catch the trout, you realize hoe fun life can be.
